Illegal immigration didn’t make his area what it is; mass corporate farming did, as he barely mentions. But living in Fresno County, by his account, which I find entirely credible, doesn’t sound like fun.

We don’t care when someone dies. I’m tired of the concern trolling that happens everytime there’s some political brownie points to be rended from the bodies. Its ghoulish. Ca ring about something only when it’s politically convenient means not caring about it at all.

If the 17k or so people who were murdered last year passed by you like water under the bridge, then don’t bother talking to me about illegals, muslims, AAs , latinx, or anyone else killing people, because NEWSFLASH; a bullet can kill no matter whose gun it’s being fired from. Getting hit means you’r e still fuckin’ dead. If you’re not prepared to do something about all the violence in our society, then y ou don’t care about it. There isn’t a special kind of super-murder we should be singularly concerned about; all of it is bad .

If you’re cool with men known to commit intimate partner violence being able to buy guns, then you can take Mollie’s name outta your mouth, because she’d be just another dead woman to you if a jealous or unstable boyfriend had killed her, just like all the others who will die to DV this year. If we only care about death when we can plant it like a seed and reap a miserable, bigoted harvest, we don’t care at all. We either need to prepare to take real action that will render us a safer society, or stop prete nding to care about the bodies piling up around us, because concern trolling and terrible domestic policy is not gonna fix it.

It seems like I’ve stepped into the middle of your side of a conversation here and I’m not sure what you are talking about. I am interested, but you’ll have to back it up, slow it down for me.

This is good anger without any proposed solutions. Were you this angry when Clinton increased deportations by 93%? Or when it was proven that the photos of children in cages were taken during Obama’s (record breaking deportation) tenure? Or are you only mad now because Trump?

I don’t think anyone of sound mind thinks a man with a history of DV should be anywhere other than downrange of a firearm.

Idk, seemed pretty clear to me. He’s saying that we, collectively the media, american populous, etc, only actually care about murder when it’s a convenient occurrence to prop a political argument up on. If Mollie had been killed by an American her entire story would have been a local headline, maybe a blip on the national news, and that’s it. We would have forgotten about it as quickly as any other viral news story, and yet as it involves an illegal immigrant it has become a much bigger story than it deserves to be.

As such, the statement PS9 is making is that unless we, collectively, are going to make equally big of a deal out of any old murder, we really shouldn’t say anything about this murder as anything special. He points out, I feel reasonably so, that there are far more murders as a result of, say, domestic violence each year and we do NOTHING to prevent them. Yet with Mollie there will be calls for stricter immigration laws, as if this is some special case that is somehow worse than the thousands murdered each year by quote-unquote real A mericans.

Good morning Jake. Pursuant to PS9's comment, I looked up Mollie’s story this morning and realized immediately all of what you’ve said and this is pretty much my appraisal as well. I was not irked in any way by PS9's comment, I just wasn’t sure what he was saying. Yes, political opportunism and the expense of this unfortunate young woman and her family. I entirely agree, though with the cave at that there is a broader discussion surrounding, for example, Black Lives Matter versus All Lives Matter, that is worthy of some unpacking.

Black lives matter vs All lives matter is a broken perspective IMO.

The non-extreme core of the BLM movement was saying “hey, we should be equal. We matter too”. I don’t think the vast majority of those within that movement ever meant it as some slight to non-blacks.

All lives do matter, just some less than others, seems like.

Which is exactly why the movement started, because it seemed like black lives weren’t being valued equally.

If your takeaway  is to dismiss BLM because ‘all lives matter’ then you aren’t actually listening to them. Kind of like the freak out over NFL players kneeling focusing on the action as a front to America without acknowledging the actual message

It’s easy for sentiment and nuance to get lost when we share our words this way. I do not dismiss BLM; quite the opposite. I also have strong feelings about players kneeling at NFL games, a sport that makes a few White men rich while men of color endure chronic traumatic brain injuries that scar them for life. (Though we still don’t know how Steve Young is going to fare, long term...)

And if I could offer you this language piece: you type “...the action as a front to America...” I believe what you are after is “...the action as an affront to America...” Affront is one of my favorite words because even though one might offer me an affront, I have the power to choose whether to take offense.

Thank you for the dialogue. Are you and I on pretty much the same page?
